Some people show signs of hypersensitivity towards electromagnetic and electric fields emitted by video display units (VDU) and a host of other electronic apparatuses and electrical installations. Especially those using computers extensively are at risk. We hold them to be "electroallergic" (EA) and show "EA-sensitivity". There are relatively few such people; rough estimates run between 1:1000 to 2:100, but personal tragedies may be great.
Symptoms
In light cases, EA-sensitives suffer from headache, itching, rosacea, dizziness etc.; in more severe cases, they may get problems with fatigue, memory loss, concentration and sleeping problems, flu-like feelings, fever and such things. Without drastic 'sanitation' of living and working quarters complaints will become stronger and adequate functioning becomes problematic. One becomes socially isolated. There is no cure or medical treatment and prospects seem discouraging. The evident solution is to eliminate such fields or escape them.
Confusion with ME and MCS?
EA is badly understood and not commonly accepted. EA sensitives have no standard record or repertoire of complaints, except that intensive use of VDU's is often associated with the initiation of the EA phenomena. One person may complain about itching hair while another may develop headache or nausea. Symptoms resemble those recorded for different food allergies (hence the term electroallergy), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and confusion between the real cause of the symptoms is possible, as it seems. There may even be connections between the different illnesses. It seems at least worth exploring that possibility.
Recovery in a clean environment
The mentioned effects and the ‘noise' in the ear drain away after 2-3 days. What stays is the skin irritation (e.g. seborrhoic eczema), swellings and blisters on the tongue. The ability to detect EM fields increases: tinnitus when putting on laptops at distance of multiple meters. For example some see an increase of other allergies like asthma and food-allergies.
Virtually full recovery is possible after staying several days in a ‘clean' environment, but every exposure delays the recovery effective.
After considerable recovery there can be build a sort of resilience: the first hours of exposure to EM fields have no immediate effect; appearance can deceive because the fundamental influence of possible brain functions has indeed taken place and the effects will yet occur with some delay.
